What is the best way to increase your ice makers lifespan?

Friday, November 21st, 2008

The answer is a simple one:

Have your private or commercial ice machine serviced at least once a year!

Ice Machines are very much like cars, every couple of thousand kilometers you have to take your car into the dealership and they do routine checks and change certain parts.

There are many benefits of servicing your private or commercial ice machine, these include:

  • It will lengthen the overall life of your ice maker.
  • Unhealthy bacterial growth is destroyed
  • The production capacity will be improved
  • By reducing scale and rust within the unit, wear and tear on parts is decreased thus reducing future maintenance costs.

But what actually gets done during an ice machine service?

  • Sanitizing & cleaning with Scotsman solution, designed to remove scale, rust and bacterial growth.
  • Cleaning of coil & exterior.
  • Full mechanical check.
  • Full refrigerant check.
  • Re-set controls and wiring to factory specification.

Technical Tip – Cleaning Your Ice Maker

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

When cleaning a machine during a service, ONLY USE SCOTSMAN APPROVED ACID! Other acids have the incorrect pH level for Scotsman Genuine Parts, and this will cause severe damage to your machine!

By no means use pool acid or any industrial chemicals like HCl. These damage parts in the ice machine and are very expensive to replace. Please if you have a handy man or technician who works on your kitchen appliances in your home or restaurant make sure he is using the correct chemicals in your ice machine!

Cleaning your machine regularly with Scostman Approved Acid, will not only get rid of scale, but also get rid unwanted bacteria and dirt that may gather because of humidity! It will also prolong your commercial or private ice machine’s life. .

Scotsman Acid is available from Ice Systems (Pty) Ltd. for R138 per liter. Call now to place an order -

5 Tips For Buying Your Own Ice Machine

Monday, November 17th, 2008

At Ice Systems (Pty) Ltd our sales team, constantly field a barrage of phone calls of people who want an ice machine but are not quite sure what they should be looking for. I for one have a small Scotsman AC56 at home, and it is a brilliant piece of engineering! And a real life saver during parties! Here are 5 tips for buying your own ice machine!

Tip #1 – How much ice do you need?

The whole point in a private ice machine is that you’ll have ice when and where you need it. No more driving to the nearest filling station or supermarket to buy 4kgs of ice that’ll be melted by the time you get home! The AC46 and AC56 are perfect for home use, they produce 24.5kg and 31kg per 24 hours. I live in a house with 5 other people and we’ve never run out of ice with our Scotsman AC56.

Tip #2 – What kind of ice?

Scotsman machines come in a variety of cubes but the AC46 and AC56 deliver the best of Scotsman’s ice shapes. They make the Gourmet Cube, a bell shape cube that does not only look extremely interesting but also lasts much longer than any other ice cube and wont get stuck to other cubes in the bin!

Tip #3 – Space!

Something we never have enough of is space, you buy a new fridge it does not fit, hang a new painting and it will not fit in the gap no matter how hard you try. An Ice machine that you could easily put under your bar or in your kitchen, such as the AC46 or AC56 have dimensions of 386 x 600 x 643 (mm) and 386 x 600 x 693 – 828* (mm) respectively. You also need to leave 150mm of space on both sides of the ice machine!

Tip #4 – Air cooled or water cooled? What is the difference?

Air cooled machines are very good if you have a great deal of ventilation and a generally low ambient temperature. They are relatively cheaper than water cooled machines and they are easier to install. The water cooled machine is perfect if ventilation is a problem. They are also more efficient and may reduce costs.

Tip #5 – Drainage: Not really a problem anymore.

Scotsman ice machines are world leaders in innovation and have come up with a pump-to-drain system for machines that do not have access to a floor drain. Both the AC46 and AC56 come with this pump-to-drain system (it slightly more but well worth it). If you need the pump-to-drain system you need to ask for the EC range, so the EC46 or EC56. But if you have access to a floor level drain then the AC series will do just fine!

Ice for laboratories

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Ice for laboratories should be flaky and moist for experiment usage. The flaky ice for laboratories can easily be compacted or spread out for a larger cooling service as required. The flaky ice is the most natural form of ice and contains a granular form. The ice can also be used for cone shavings. A second consideration when looking for a machine that can produce ice for laboratories is the size of the machine. It should be small enough not to take up valuable space in the labs. In this instance two machines stand out. The M30 and the AF80 are both small and provide maximum quantities of ice for laboratories.
