The Vuvuzela!!

BZZZZ! BZZZZ! BZZZZ!

Anyone who has watched any of the Confederations Cup will undoubtedly have noticed that South African stadiums have been taken over by swarms of  bees!! Okay not real bees but the Vuvuzela horns!

The South African football tradition of blowing on these horns has been a part of our football culture for decades and I think it really makes our supporters stand out, and i could not imagine watching South African soccer without them!

There is a great article on the FIFA website about the Vuvuzela and its use in African football, they compare it to the Brazillian drums, Switzerland’s Cowbells and the Mexican Wave!! The Vuvuzela is as much a part of South African football as the Springbok Emblem is to our Rugby side, it defines us. It is what makes Bafana Bafana supporters different!

Saying it distracts the players is utter nonsense, any person who has ever played sport will tell you your focus on the game is paramount and you block the crowd out almost completely!

I think the Vuvuzela tradition is great and will make the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009, and next year’s World Cup memorable and really put an African spin on world football.  Who knows maybe we’ll see Vuvuzela’s at European Football matches next year???

Yours in noise!! BZZZZZZ!
